Table of Contents Why Anne Conway? Anne Conway is among the few better known and documented pre-twentieth century women philosophers any of whose work and ideas have come down to the present properly attributed to her. The pull quote selected from her posthumous treatise The Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy is strikingly apt, "Nature is not simply an organic body like a clock, which has no vital principle of motion in it; but it is a living body which has life and perception, which are much more exalted than a mere mechanism or a mechanical motion." We can argue about whether she meant Nature is literally conscious in the typically understood human sense, yet it is quite clear she understood Nature as Be-ing. |
