Due to the high probability that the adjective should modify a place name, the ancient, partly Aeolic speaking city of Smyrna has been inserted here. It was originally on the west coast of present-day Turkey, with a port and control of fertile lands for farming, as well as social and political connections to Sappho's home island, Lesbos.
